The Casual Vacany

I’ve had the past week off of work which has allowed me to not only have the best time ever being completely worthless but to also catch up on some reading. One of the books I really wanted to get around to was J. K. Rowling’s latest book The Casual Vacancy. I’m a huge fan of the Harry Potter series and was excited she wrote an adult book this time. Naturally I bought it the day it came out, but it’s been sitting on my shelf staring at me to read it ever since. I’m so glad I finally picked it up. I thoroughly enjoyed all 500 pages. It follows several different characters that are all connected through a small town. Many of the characters are not likable, good people yet she still makes their stories interesting and entertaining. The characters come from a variety of backgrounds providing some nice social commentary on how the different classes interact and view one another. I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to see what J. K. Rowling does next. Here’s a synopsis of the book.

When Barry Fairbrother dies unexpectedly in his early forties, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…. Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town’s council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? Blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling’s first novel for adults.

Bringing in the New Year Right

When it comes to bring in the New Year with a party, Skins sets the bar pretty high.

So so so far behind...

Creepin Out With the Hulk

I don't know if it's due to all of the holiday excitement, but it seems that the Hulk is feeling a little pervy.

Jingle Disk

When I was little we had this program on our computer, and I used to watch it so much. I thought it was the coolest things ever.

A House Full of Dolls

Does anyone remember the Full House dolls? I thought it was funny that the Tanners got their own set as did Jessie, Rebecca and the twins, but Joey was left out in the cold alone and doll-less. Actually he had a doll, but there weren't many made. You had to buy the other two sets and send away for him. Poor Joey. He got left out, but Michelle got her very own larger talking doll. The kids get everything.

Superman Is Coming

The brand new trailer for the new Superman movie, Man of Steel, was just released and I gotta say it looks pretty awesome. I'm excited to see Amy Adams as Lois Lane. She's great in everything she does. Also, Henry Cavill is super dreamy. It looks like this could bring the Superman movies back to a good place.

Cupcakes Snowman Time!

Since it's around the holidays I thought I'd post some more fun themed cupcakes. This time I'm focusing on snowmen.

I've Kind of Been Getting Into This

Recently I listened to a friend's recommendation to start watching the show Once Upon A Time. I was a little hesitant because it looks pretty cheesy with cheap special effects. Both of those are true, but I flew through the first season and actually enjoyed it. The writing is good, and they've made many of the fairy tales far more complex and interesting than the basic versions we all know. Besides, who doesn't love a show with some magic?

Nothing Like an AT-AT Christmas

Remember When Ryan Gosling Was Half Man Half God?

Well if not maybe this can refresh your memory.

I've been getting a little behind with my Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar, but I'll try to get caught up. Here's December 5th's lego surprise.

Today's Teen Moment

Brought to you by Beverly Hills 90210.

Because really, who wouldn't want to throw Donna down some stairs?

I Guess It's Holiday Time

Since we're already into December and Christmas is only 19 days away I guess it's time to start getting a little festive.

Poor Rogue

She doesn't deserve to have an action figure that looks this insane. It's hard to believe that this is a real toy sold to children. It's pretty terrifying.
